The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Barbados.
A Flash Flood Warning is issued when rapid flooding due to heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) is occurring or is imminent in the warning area.
The Met Office says that light winds, from Tropical Storm Gabrielle well north of the region, along with high daytime temperatures, are allowing for afternoon localised convection.
These showers are expected mainly over northwestern and western districts during the afternoon, with convection diminishing during the late evening.
BMS warns that rainfall accumulations of 50 to 100 mm from moderate to heavy showers this afternoon may cause flooding across low-lying areas in some western sections of Barbados.
Possible impacts:
- Water settling on roads and fields, and adjustments to water levels in ponds and other water bodies.
- Large objects or debris from higher elevations being carried in fast-moving water flows.
- Flooding at the foot of hillsides and along coastal roads.
- Traffic delays, with some roads potentially impassable or cut off in and out of minor towns.
The public is encouraged to monitor official sources for further updates.
This Flash Flood Warning will be updated or terminated at 6 p.m., or sooner if conditions warrant.
