Call for private sector to be involved in disaster management

June 25, 2024

Predictions of a likely hyperactive 2024 hurricane season and the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that recently rocked Trinidad and Tobago, are clear indicators that the private sector needs to be heavily involved in the regional response mechanism.

That’s according to Executive Director of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), Elizabeth Riley.

She says the agency sees the private sector as a trusted partner in advancing the regional comprehensive disaster management agenda.

Ms. Riley was addressing the opening of the ‘Building Public-Private Partnerships for Disaster Resilience in the Caribbean’ Workshop currently underway in Barbados.

Meanwhile, Chair Network of Caribbean Chambers of Commerce (CARICHAM), Petipha Lewis, says one of the foremost outcomes anticipated to come from the three-day workshop is the development of a unified coherent strategy for disaster management.
