Call for urgent review of minimum wage

May 14, 2024

The Barbados Employers’ Confederation (BEC) is urgently calling for a review and changes to the Minimum Wage Act, and the Minimum Wage Order.

Executive Director Sheena Mayers-Granville says any increase in the minimum wage must be based on cost of living and the level of productivity in the workforce.

She made the comments during a press conference to announce the BEC’s week of activities.

Ms. Mayers-Granville says they are aware the Ministry of Labour is responsible for enforcing labour laws, while the Employment Rights Tribunal (ERT) has an expanded mandate for adjudicating cases.

However, the BEC remains concerned about the resources available to both entities.

Additional changes the BEC would like to see include the ERT being able to reduce awards where employees contribute to their own termination, a minimum threshold for consultation prior to redundancy, and a comprehensive labour code for Barbados.
