With the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season set to begin in four days, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) says the region remains highly vulnerable and is stressing the importance of preparedness.
CDEMA’s Executive Director, Elizabeth Riley, provided an update on this year’s hurricane season.
She noted that an above-average season is predicted, with experts from Colorado State University forecasting 17 named storms, nine of which are expected to become hurricanes, and four likely to become major hurricanes.
Additionally, CDEMA recently concluded discussions and formalised partnerships with the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Kestrel Liner Agencies, and Sunrise Airways.
This new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is a successor to one that ran from 2019 and ended in March of this year.
The updated MOU will now run until March 2026.
Ms. Riley says these continued partnerships will help boost regional coordination and strengthen disaster response efforts.
