Classes will resume at the Charles F. Broome Memorial School tomorrow, after teachers called in sick on Monday and met with Education Ministry officials today.
Deputy Chief Education Officer (Schools), Julia Beckles, said chief among the teachers’ concerns is the congestion that occurs outside the Government Hill, St Michael-based institution in the mornings when entering, and in the evenings when leaving.
She added that some motorists are parked for extended periods, creating a hostile environment where teachers feel threatened.
The ministry has also consulted with the Ministry of Transport and Works and the Barbados Police Service to explore short- and long-term solutions.
Parents had to rush to collect their children yesterday afternoon following the early closure. The action followed an alleged altercation between a teacher and a parent last Friday, which remains under investigation.
First Vice-President of the Barbados Union of Teachers, Julian Pierre, said that while no solution has been reached, teachers are satisfied that the Ministry is treating the matter with urgency.
