Construction of a respite centre and residential living facility for adults with disabilities is set to begin next year.
The announcement from Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley.
She was speaking as Debate on a Resolution to take note of the National Policy for Improving the Lives of Persons with Disabilities continued in the Lower House today.
The Prime Minister says the location of the facilities has not yet been determined, but the intention is to operate them in conjunction with non-governmental organisations who cater to people with disabilities.
Prime Minister Mottley says Government has set a target of 100% accessibility for key Government buildings and public spaces in the next three years.
She revealed an audit to guide this process needs to be completed by March next year, so the funds can be included in the Estimates for the next financial year.
As it relates to transportation, Prime Minister Mottley says access to vans operated by the National Disabilities Unit must be extended to evenings and weekends.
She also wants to see the introduction of disability-friendly privately owned public service vehicles.
