Students of St. Lawrence Primary School will benefit from a year-long lesson plan, which will teach them about hazards that could affect them, their school, and Barbados in general.
The Department of Emergency Management has formed a closer association with the institution under its inaugural Adopt-a-School Programme.
The DEM has designated March as Coastal Hazard and Earthquake Smart Month, under the theme Building Resilience from Coastline to Community.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs & Information, Jennifer King, says the St. Lawrence Main Road, Christ Church-based school has been selected to be a part of the programme due to its close proximity to the coast, which makes it vulnerable to coastal hazards such as storm surges and tsunamis.
Principal Lorraine Gittens says the school welcomes the valuable and forward-thinking initiative.
