It’s now not a matter of if, but when a by-election will be held for the St. James North constituency.
This is after Member of Parliament for the area, Edmund Hinkson, submitted his letter of resignation to Parliament.
It was addressed to and read by Speaker of the House of Assembly, Senior Counsel His Honour Arthur Holder, shortly after today’s sitting began.
Last December, Mr. Hinkson, who has served St. James North for three consecutive terms, announced he had no intention of running in the next general election, constitutionally due in 2027.
In a statement issued after the announcement was read in Parliament, Mr. Hinkson said he remains committed to serving the country and the Barbados Labour Party in whatever capacity he is called upon to do so.
The senior counsel notes that part of service is knowing when to pass the baton, and he now steps aside so a new generation of leadership can emerge, not in conflict, but in continuity.
He’s made it clear his resignation from Parliament is not borne out of discord or discontent, and he remains a member of the BLP.
Mr. Hinkson was elected to the House of Assembly in the February 2013 general election and retained his seat in 2018 when the Barbados Labour Party won the election.
He was subsequently appointed as the Minister of Home Affairs, and last served as chairman of the Advisory Committee for Improving the Lives of People with Disabilities.
Over in the St. James North constituency, residents say the representative, known for his thoughtful birthday greetings, will be sorely missed.
