Efforts on to secure affordable funding for farmers

June 15, 2024

There are good days ahead for Barbadian farmers as efforts are being made to secure affordable funding for them.

According to Minister of Agriculture Indar Weir with the introduction of the Barbados Blue Green Bank on the horizon, issues of this kind should be a thing of the past.

He says with the present construct in the financial services centre, there’s not a huge appetite for farmers as it is considered risky.

Meanwhile the Minister says before long, primary and secondary school students interested in agriculture will have more opportunities to develop and hone their skills in the field.

This as the Ministry of Agriculture sets out on a mission to introduce green houses into schools.

Mr. Weir says the green houses will be sourced from Guyana.

He says with this undertaking, farmers will not have to set aside space on their farms to ensure there are seedlings or green houses.

But he’s hopeful with children getting more involved as part of the schools’ curriculum it will see a return of interest to the sector.
