Barbados is undertaking several initiatives set out in the National Policy on Ageing, as it recognises the elderly population is a valuable resource.
These include training care workers for the elderly, preparation of draft legislation for the protection of older people and the phased establishment of day care, respite and residential facilities.
The update came as Barbados joins with other countries globally to commemorate International Day of Older Persons.
Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Kirk Humphrey, in his message, assured that every effort is being made to honour the elderly as foundation builders of the country.
International Day of Older Persons is being observed under the theme “Ageing With Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide”.
