The proposed Barbados Institute for Fisheries and related studies is set to play a key role in strengthening the island’s fisheries sector.
Chief Fisheries Officer, Dr Shelly-Ann Cox, says authorities are currently developing the charter for the new training institute. She explains that the project is provided for under Barbados’ Sustainable Fisheries Management and Development Act.
Dr Cox made the announcement as she addressed the closing ceremony for the Barbados National Union of Fisherfolk Organizations’ (BARNUFO) 2025 Fisherfolk Training Programme. With BARNUFO’s mandate to strengthen the fisheries sector through training, capacity building and sustainability initiatives, the organisation facilitated fisherfolk training from October 4 to November 6. Dr Cox reports that about fifty members of the fishing community completed courses across several disciplines.
