A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for Barbados.

A Flash Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favourable for flooding within the next 48 hours.

It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible.

The Barbados Meteorological Services says over the past few days, a trough system has been affecting the region with low wind speeds and daytime heating. This has led to an increase in instability which is currently increasing shower activity across the island.

Brief moderate to heavy showers during this afternoon and tonight could generate flooding across low-lying areas in Barbados due to the already saturated nature of the soil.

Light to moderate showers are forecasted with rainfall accumulations of 1 to 2 inches (50 mm).

Tonight, showers are expected to persist as an area of convergence trailing the feature will be affecting the island.

Some improvement is expected tomorrow afternoon.

Possible Impacts:

-There is a medium possibility of significant flooding.

-Water settlements on roads and fields. Increase water levels of existing water bodies (e.g. ponds etc.)

-Some delays on traffic routes in the area.

-Debris such as small rocks, mud and tree foliage could end up on roads and property. Traffic delays are likely.

-Flooding at the foot of hillsides and coastal roads is possible.

The BMS is advising you to travel with full protective rain gear, plan your travelling early to account for delays or stay off roads if possible.

The public is also encouraged to monitor official sources for further updates.

This Flash Flood Watch will be updated/terminated at 6:00 p.m. or sooner if conditions warrant.
