The Flash Flood Watch issued for Barbados has been upgraded to a warning.
A flood warning is issued when flooding due to heavy or excessive rainfall is occurring or is imminent in the warning area.
The Barbados Meteorological Services says over the past few days, a trough system has been affecting the region with low wind speeds and daytime heating.
This has led to an increase in instability which is currently increasing shower activity across the island.
Flooding has already begun across areas of St. George and these conditions are expected to persist tonight with some improvement tomorrow afternoon Saturday, December 14, 2024.
Tonight, the showers are expected to persist as an area of convergence trailing the feature will be affecting Barbados.
Light to moderate showers are forecasted with rainfall accumulations of 1 to 2 inches (50 mm)
Possible Impacts:
Runoff from higher elevations. Soil erosion/land slippage on exposed or scarred land surfaces.
Water settlements on roads and fields.
Adjustments to water levels of existing water bodies (ponds etc.).
Large objects or debris from higher elevations become embedded within fast-moving water flows.
Flooding at the foot of hillsides and coastal roads.
Delays on traffic routes with some roads being impassable or cut off in and out of some districts
The public is urged to follow the recommendations from the Department of Emergency Management and monitor official sources for further updates.
This Flash Flood Warning will be updated/terminated at 6:00 p.m. or sooner if conditions warrant.
