Government moving to protect island’s maritime cultural heritage

Government is moving to protect the island’s maritime cultural heritage, as it seeks to capitalise on a 600 billion dollar heritage tourism industry.

Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Senator Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight, made the point as she led off Debate on the Maritime and Underwater Heritage Bill.

She notes it will, among other things, set out a regulatory framework for ships which enter the island’s waters and may need to discharge effluent.

Senator Munro-Knight says the Bill will also ensure the protection of the island’s lighthouses.
