As Barbados’ ageing population continues to grow, Government is putting measures in place to ensure the elderly are taken care of in their twilight years.
To assist in this effort, the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, in partnership with the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology is introducing a certificate course in communities throughout the island on caring for the older adult.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Jehu Wiltshire says the training is coming at a critical time when 20% of the population is over age 60.
This figure is projected to rise in excess of 50% by 2050.
Mr. Wiltshire was speaking at the launch of the training programme.
The inaugural fourteen week course will be held at the Lester Vaughn School on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., starting from March 25.
It will cater to residents of St. Thomas, St. Andrew, St. Joseph and parts of St. Michael.
SJPI’s Acting Principal Brenda Osbourne is encouraging participants to utilise the training.
