There are concerns tonight over what is considered to be a healthy snack.
Nutritionist Nicole Elliott is warning that genetically modified apples engineered to prevent browning are making their way into the homes of Barbadians.
The co-chair of the Barbados Childhood Obesity Prevention Coalition pointed out that fact while delivering remarks on the dangers of increased ultra-processed foods (UPFs) in the Barbadian diet.
She was speaking at a Ban on Marketing of Unhealthy Foods and Drinks in Schools media training workshop, hosted by the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados Inc.
Ms. Elliott says while some may question what to give their children to eat, now that they are hearing that some apples and other fruits and vegetables, which are supposed to be among healthier food options, are genetically modified, they should choose from the lesser of two evils.
Meanwhile, Senior Lecturer in Qualitative Research Methods at the George Alleyne Chronic Disease Research Centre, University of the West Indies, Dr. Madhuvanti Murphy, is encouraging parents to introduce their children to locally grown fruits and vegetables.
