The Immigration Department is not in the business of giving away work permits.
This position has been made clear by Minister of Information and Home Affairs Wilfred Abrahams who says the department goes above and beyond to ensure a skill set is not readily available in Barbados before a work permit is granted.
In fact, he said a recent application for a work permit for someone to fill an office assistant post was denied.
And with the construction industry booming, Minister Abrahams says construction firms are applying for work permits to bring in workers from overseas.
However, he says the Ministry of Education is actively looking at existing shortages in that sector.
