Though Barbados has seen an increase in suicides, the island maintains one of the lowest rates in the world.
Consultant Psychiatrist with the Ministry of Health at the Psychiatric Hospital, Dr. Joy Sue says the rate stood at 1.6 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, a recent cluster of suicides saw it increase above two.
Dr. Sue says the problem is arising in individuals between the ages of 16 and 30.
She shared information on CBC TV8’s Mornin’ Barbados on a rapid analysis conducted into the causes of the suicides in the cluster.
Ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day to be observed on September 10, Dr. Sue says heightened awareness of mental illness and mental health is required.
The day will be observed under the theme “Change the Narrative”.
Nursing Officer with the Psychiatric Hospital, Ryan Lewis says despite some hesitancy, there’s been an increase in the number of people visiting the Assessment Unit of the Black Rock, St. Michael institution.
He adds stigma remains a barrier for those wanting to access mental health care.
