Barbados has recorded a 100% increase in the number of individuals seeking psychological and mental health services during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
That’s according to Chief Medical Officer Dr. the Most Honourable Kenneth George.
He says while he does not have exact figures, officials have observed many of those presenting with mental health challenges are young people.
He says to urgently tackle this issue, local health authorities are taking a number of measures, including working with the Pan American Health Organisation to review the country’s mental health legislation.
Dr. George made the revelation while delivering remarks at the start of the 69th Caribbean Public Health Agency’s Annual Health Research Conference. He says the Ministry is doing all that’s possible to help young people presenting with mental health challenges.
