A still from the video circulating online.
The Ministry of Agriculture is describing a video, currently in circulation, as malicious and intended to mislead the public.
The video shows several bales of sugar outside the Portvale Sugar Factory.
However, Minister Indar Weir says it misrepresents standard operational procedures at Portvale and undermines the integrity of the production process.
Minister Weir says the sugar shown in the video is awaiting remelting, a routine and controlled part of quality assurance. He also notes that all sugar designated for remelting is temporarily stored outside the factory for same-day processing. This he says, ensures that only sugar that meets the strict standards required for direct consumption is packaged and distributed.
Minister Weir explains that sugar is remelted for several legitimate and quality-related reasons and adds that it is important to note that Portvale produces only direct consumption sugar, which must meet international food safety and quality standards. Any sugar not meeting these specifications is reprocessed, not discarded, to ensure product integrity and reduce waste.
He also reassures the public that the factory maintains rigid quality control protocols, and any attempts to misrepresent these processes are both irresponsible and harmful.
