The Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs is condemning the recent brazen daylight attack on a senior citizen.
In a statement, Minister Kirk Humphrey expressed profound shock and absolute horror at the senseless and despicable act of violence, which was captured and circulated across social media platforms.
He stated that the Ministry is fully aware of the challenges faced by the elderly, and stressed that over the coming months, it is his firm intention to bring ageing legislation to Parliament, specifically targeting elder abuse.
He warned that individuals found guilty of abusing the nation’s elderly in a court of law will face hefty fines and imprisonment for committing such atrocious acts.
He further cautioned those who seek out easy prey to “see the elderly and leave them alone”.
Minister Humphrey also urged Barbadians to be vigilant and more caring towards the elderly.
He added that he is aware a major investigation has been launched, and thanked the police for their diligent efforts.
The Minister said his Ministry stands ready to offer social services to the elderly gentleman as he navigates the difficult road to recovery from the traumatic ordeal.
Meanwhile, Police Communications and Public Affairs Officer, Acting Inspector Ryan Brathwaite, said investigations are still ongoing.
He also noted that a photo circulating on social media, purporting to show the suspect in custody, is false.
