The Autism Association of Barbados continues to advocate for greater support for parents of children with autism.
On World Autism Awareness Day, the association’s Public Relations Officer, Nadia Simmons, emphasised the need for policies to help parents afford essential therapies.
Simmons, who is the mother of a seven-year-old non-verbal son, shared her concerns as a guest on CBC TV8’s Mornin’ Barbados.
World Autism Awareness Day was established by the United Nations in 2007 to promote understanding, acceptance, and inclusion of individuals with autism worldwide.
Barbadians are encouraged to wear blue today in support of the cause.
The theme for World Autism Awareness Day 2025 is “Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”
Meanwhile, speech-language pathologist Sue McMillan has been working with individuals with autism to enhance their communication and social skills.
She stressed that early intervention is crucial in improving outcomes for those on the autism spectrum.
