Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has paid tribute to Alvin “Soca Superman” Toppin, who passed away recently.
The Prime Minister said that he was a champion of Barbadian culture and commended his strong community spirit.
Here is her full statement:
Barbados mourns a cherished son of our soil, Alvin “Soca Superman” Toppin.
Long before social media trends dictated what was popular, Alvin made sure soca was always trending. On the radio, in the fetes, and in the hearts of our people. He championed our culture, pushing the sound of Barbados with courage, conviction, and love.
He didn’t do it for the clout, he did it for the love of the genre, proudly carrying our flag wherever he went.
As an insurance advisor, he quietly helped families plan for their futures. As a DJ, he uplifted spirits. As a political aspirant in St. Lucy under the Democratic Labour Party banner, he showed a willingness to meet people where they are.
His strong sense of community spirit always led him to participate in community activities, as he did just this year, giving of his talents during the St. Lucy leg of We Gatherin’.
To Alvin’s daughter, mother, siblings, friends, and colleagues across the political divide, we extend our deepest condolences and solidarity. May you find solace in the love he sowed in every life he touched.
Let Alvin’s example inspire us to honour tradition, to uplift each other, and to stand for what we believe in, not for the likes, but for the love.
