Prime Minister Mottley pays tribute to Tom Grant

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has paid tribute to Barbadian businessman Thomas “Tom” Grant, who passed away recently.

She praised his unwavering determination, noting that throughout his life and work, he showed how perseverance, passion, commitment, and ambition can transform dreams into reality.

Here is the Prime Minister’s full statement:

The death of Barbadian businessman Thomas “Tom” Grant has no doubt induced immense sadness that will last for some time, but his rags-to-riches story as a self-made entrepreneur who helped many along the way will remain an inspiration for years to come.

Born into humble beginnings, his tireless spirit, unwavering determination, and hard work led to the creation of a business empire that spanned various industries, including automotive spare parts and accessories, hair care and beauty supplies, transportation services, construction, pharmacies and hospitality.

Through his business operations, Tom not only created opportunities for economic growth but also provided employment for many Barbadians.

Initially, Tom’s career goal was to pursue dentistry, and although he became a dental technician, his experience working as an automotive spare parts clerk and later as parts manager sparked his entrepreneurial spirit.

This led him to establish Grant’s Garage & Co. Ltd in his home district of Tichbourne, Howells Cross Rd, St. Michael.

What started as a small venture in a chattel house would eventually expand and provide the financial resources for investments in various other business enterprises.

Throughout his life and work, Tom demonstrated that perseverance, passion, commitment, and ambition can transform dreams into reality.

The Grants Group of Companies, under his leadership, focused not only on business operations but also on giving back to the community.

He sponsored sporting events, fun days, and education grants, showcasing his commitment to social responsibility. His support for culture was evident through his sponsorship of Oistins Fish Festival activities, facilitating a Grants T-Shirt band for Crop Over, and being the main sponsor of the Ras Iley Calypso Tent, Grants Lions Den.

At the heart of Tom’s life was his love for family, particularly his children and friends.

He provided love, care, and affection, making time for those close to him while nurturing and reflecting loyalty and generosity.

His entrepreneurial spirit, innovative leadership, and community participation reflect the legacy of this outstanding Barbadian, serving as an inspiration to future generations of entrepreneurs and business leaders.

Today, as we come together to say our final farewell, on behalf of the Government and people of Barbados, I extend sincere condolences to his family, especially his children Andrew, Keith, Kathy, Mario, Tamara, Thomas, Tommi-Ann, Tomaz, Wayne and Nigel.
