Quick action by tenants of Oistins Bay Garden helped avert a disaster after an oil spill from a pumping facility at Oistins, Christ Church, early this morning.
Reports were made to officials around 2 a.m.
Barriers were placed, effectively stopping the oil from making its way onto the main road and the sea.
Emergency crews, including the Barbados Police Service and Barbados Fire Service, along with technical officials from the Barbados National Energy Company, the Drainage Department and the Department of Emergency Management, were also mobilised.
The road was also closed temporarily to facilitate the cleanup, including from the nearby car park.
This affected traffic into Oistins and the many businesses there.
Acting Prime Minister, Santia Bradshaw and several other ministers, including the Ministers of Energy and the Environment, were also on the scene.
Ms Bradshaw says efforts were also made to avoid the oil getting into the town’s drainage system.
Group Health and Safety Manager at Barbados National Energy Company, Damien Catlyn says an investigation has commenced into the oil spill.
