The long-awaited ferry service should be a reality within the coming months.
That’s the word from Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kerrie Symmonds, who was commenting on closing statements made by CARICOM Chair and Prime Minister of Jamaica Dr. Andrew Holness.
Minister Symmonds says the agreement is between Barbados and Guyana for cargo only, but they are hopeful to include passengers shortly.
Additionally, Minister Symmonds says governments are looking to see how best a person wanting to travel to other islands via the ferry with their vehicles can do so, similar to how it is done in Trinidad and Tobago.
Minister Symmonds has been named lead foreign minister along with Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith.
He says this will mean enhanced port facilities, a mutual recognition of vehicle registration and driver’s licences, harmonisation of vehicle insurance policies, the removal of non-tariff barriers, and enhanced customs clearance.
