There is a growing concern that telecommunications companies and tech giants are benefiting from content produced by traditional media without fair compensation.
And Minister of Information and Home Affairs, Wilfred Abrahams, says many of these media outlets are state-owned.
He is calling on key players, such as the Caribbean Broadcasting Union, to join with RJRGleaner, which has openly highlighted the issue, to encourage discussion and negotiation to include the key area of fair compensation to the media.
He is making it clear that these tech giants pulling information from traditional media houses should be paying them for it.
Minister Abrahams highlighted the issue while delivering remarks at the CBU’s Annual General Assembly, where he said traditional media in the region may be contributing more information or content per capita than any other region, but is not being equitably compensated.
And Minister Abrahams says it is also concerning that telecoms companies are not regulated in what they show or provide, despite traditional media entities having to meet certain standards and restrictions.
