The U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reassured Barbados and CARICOM that their concerns about President Donald Trump’s plan to revitalise America’s shipbuilding industry through a proposed fee on Chinese vessels will be raised with the relevant trade policy officials upon his return.
He insists the U.S. does not want a trade war, but says there must be alternatives to Chinese shipping construction.
The commitment was given during his visit to Guyana.
The U.S. also committed to ensuring the region does not fall to organised gangs and narco-traffickers that destabilise societies.
Rubio says the U.S. will seek opportunities to partner with the region.
