A major step towards modernising Barbados’ criminal justice system is set to begin next month, with technology being used to conduct virtual hearings at the Magistrates’ Court.
Minister of Legal Affairs and Criminal Justice, Michael Lashley, says the move is part of a wider effort to reform the justice system.
This was among a range of issues he addressed during an appearance on CBC’s radio talk show, “Let’s Talk About It”, on Q100.7FM.
With concerns about violence continuing to dominate public discussion, Minister Lashley says authorities also have to consider whether existing laws are strong enough to deter reckless behaviour in public spaces.
He contends that the wider response to crime must involve several moving parts, since legislation alone is not enough.
