GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – An investigation has been launched following a mining pit collapse on Friday that claimed the life of one miner and injured others.
The police report that Sherwayne Joseph, 26, and Imran Blake, 19, were trapped following a mining pit collapse at the St. Elizabeth Backdam in Region Eight.
Joseph, Blake, and seven other workers were on the night shift at an eight-inch dredging operation.
The police report that three other workers were in the pit when a co-worker said he heard a rumbling sound and noticed the soil had broken away and started falling into the mining pit.
The worker told investigators that he raised an alarm alerting the workers in the pit.
The land covered Joseph and Blake and buried them beneath, though the other three workers in the pit managed to escape.
The identity of the minder who died has not been revealed.
