Excessive rainfall today, Sunday, May 18, 2025, could generate flooding across low-lying areas in Barbados. Therefore, the Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a Flood Watch.
These conditions are predicted to peak tonight and into tomorrow, Monday,
May 19, 2025, with some improvement on Tuesday.
Take note of the possible impacts:
-There is a medium possibility of significant flooding, which may result in runoff from higher elevations
-Soil erosion on exposed or scarred land surfaces
-Water settlements on roads and fields at the foot of hills and coastal roads
-Delays on traffic routes, with some
roads becoming impassable
-Residents and visitors should also be aware that this alert level could elevate to red.
The public is encouraged to monitor the BMS, DEM and GIS websites and their respective social media pages, along with the local media networks for further updates.
Unstable conditions associated with surface to low-level convergence, upper level divergence along with available deep layer moisture are affecting the island. Rainfall accumulations of half an inch have already been recorded across some parts of the island during the morning. Mostly cloudy skies with intermittent scattered light to heavy showers, rain and a chance of isolated thunderstorms with rainfall accumulation of 1 to 2 inches (25 to 50 mm) is forecast.
A flood watch is issued when the conditions are favourable for flooding within the next 48 hours. It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible. This Flood Watch was issued at 12 noon today, Sunday, May 18, 2025, and will be updated at 6am Monday, May 19, 2025, or sooner if conditions warrant.
