As troughing and light winds continue affecting the island today, pockets of moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected mainly across the central, northern and eastern sections of the island.
Severe lightning activity is possible mainly across central, northern and eastern sections of the island throughout the day. Therefore, the Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch today, Thursday, September 19, 2024.
The Barbados Meteorological Services noted that “lighting activity at or near your location could result in power outages if lighting strikes power utility infrastructure. Persons are reminded that lightning strikes can be life-threatening”. The public is therefore encouraged to monitor the DEM and GIS websites and their respective social media pages along with the local media networks for further information on what you should do.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is issued when significant lightning activity is possible within the watch area (generally within 6 hours).
This alert was issued at 8:40 a.m. and will be terminated at 6:00 p.m. or sooner if conditions warrant.
