Flash-Flood Watch continues

September 17, 2024

A Flash-Flood Watch remains in effect for Barbados.

A Flash-Flood Watch is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) could result in flash flooding within the watch area. It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible.

Take note of the following possible moderate to significant impacts:

  • Soil erosion on bared or scarred land surfaces
  • Water settlements on roads and fields may lead to commuting delays and possible isolated diversions
  • Increases in water levels of existing water bodies (e.g. ponds etc.)
  • Marginally invasive excess water on roads, fields, storm drains/water canals and on property.

The public should follow recommendations from the Department of Emergency Management and monitor the BMS, DEM and GIS websites and their respective social media pages along with the local media networks for further updates.

The shear line affecting the island continues to generate pockets of moderate to heavy shower activity which is expected to persist into the night. Because of the rainfall accumulations that have already occurred throughout the day, further showers could generate flooding across low-lying areas, and therefore, the Barbados Meteorological Services has extended a Flash-Flood Watch.

This Flash Flood Watch was issued at 6:00 p.m. today, Tuesday, September 27, 2024, and will be terminated at 6:00 am, Wednesday, September 18, 2024, or sooner if conditions warrant.
