A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for northern and central sections of Barbados.
A Flash Flood Watch is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) could result in flash flooding within the watch area. It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible.
The Barbados Meteorological Services says a tropical wave is affecting the island. Therefore, cloudy to overcast conditions with intermittent scattered light to heavy localised showers and a chance of scattered thunderstorms are forecast with rainfall accumulation of 1 to 2 inches (25.0 to 50.0 mm).
There is a strong possibility of significant flooding which may result in runoff from higher elevations. Water settlements on roads and
fields at the foot of hills and coastal roads and adjustments to water levels of existing water bodies are also possible. There may be delays on traffic routes with some roads becoming impassable in and out of minor towns.
The public should follow recommendations from the Department of Emergency Management and monitor official sources for further updates.
The Flash Flood Watch will be terminated at 6:00 p.m. today, or sooner if conditions warrant.
