A strong tropical wave is affecting the island today Sunday, August 24, 2025 and could generate flooding across some low-lying areas in Barbados and thunderstorm activity. Therefore, the Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a FLASH-FLOOD WATCH and SEVERE THUNDERSTORM ADVISORY.
These conditions are predicted to peak this afternoon with some improvement expected later tonight and into tomorrow.
Take note of the following pssible impacts:
There is a medium possibility of significant flooding, which may result in runoff from higher elevations, and debris may become embedded within fast-moving water flows; water settlements on roads and fields at the foot of hills and coastal roads, as well as soil erosion on exposed land surfaces is possible; lightning activity at or near your location could result in power outages if lightning strikes power utility infrastructure; persons are reminded that lightning strikes can be life-threatening; residents and visitors should also be aware that this flash flood watch and severe thunderstorm advisory could be upgraded to a warning at short notice.
The public should follow recommendations from the Department of Emergency Management. The public is encouraged to monitor the BMS, DEM and GIS websites and their respective social media pages along with the local media networks for further updates.
This tropical wave continues to produce pockets of deep convection as it moves westward towards Barbados and the eastern Caribbean. This convection associated with the waves continues to be sporadic generating high uncertainty with the forecast location of showers and thunderstorm activity. Rainfall accumulation of 1 to 2 inches with possibly higher amounts in moderate to heavy showers, occasional gusty winds and thunderstorms this afternoon and early tonight are possible for Barbados.
A flash-flood watch is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) could result in flash flooding within the watch area. It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible. A severe-thunderstorm advisory is issued when significant lightning activity is possible within the next 6 hours. This Flash Flood Watch and severe-thunderstorm advisory was
issued at noon today, Sunday, August 24, 2025 and will be updated at 6 p.m. or sooner if conditions warrant.
