The Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for today, Tuesday, May 13, 2025, as the island is affected by severe lightning activity.
Unsettled weather conditions are generating severe lightning activity across the island. Cloudy to overcast skies with scattered light to heavy showers, rain and widespread thunderstorms are forecasted.
The Met Office has therefore urged people to be aware that possible lightning activity at or near their location could result in power outages if lightning strikes power utility infrastructure. People should also be aware that lightning strikes can be life-threatening.
The public is encouraged to monitor the DEM and GIS websites and their respective social media pages along with the local media networks for further information on what you should do.
A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued when significant lightning activity is expected in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) or is already occurring within the warning area.
This Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2025, and will be updated/terminated at noon today or sooner if conditions warrant.
