At least two mini football pitches will be laid in Barbados very soon.
This was an offer made during a near two-and-a-half-hour meeting between Sports Minister Charles Griffith, officials of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, a contingent of the Barbados Football Association, and a FIFA representative.
It is agreed that the Milton Lynch School’s playing field in Christ Church and an area at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s playing field in St. Michael are the areas where the two pitches will be set up.
The proposed mini-pitches will be 20-by-40 metre artificial turfs, built to FIFA’s international specifications, to cater to communities and schools — especially to create accessible, inclusive, safe spaces for grassroots football.
The mini-pitches are being provided to Barbados under the FIFA Arena Project to cater to children aged 4 to 15, and can last for at least ten years.
The initiative by FIFA aims to construct one thousand pitches across the world, with the Caribbean and Africa being especially targeted because of the limited resources in these regions.
It is hoped that the agreement between Government and the BFA can be concluded this month, to start the process for construction of the mini-pitches from October this year, with the installation being done before Christmas.
