In the wake of concerns about the rising number of sexually transmitted diseases among young people in Barbados, one top sporting discipline is being used to educate the island’s youth.
The power and reach of football are being harnessed to educate, engage and empower youth, particularly vulnerable groups such as school dropouts and the unemployed.
It’s being done by the Barbados Football Association in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Wellness.
They have launched a community outreach programme focused on HIV and STI prevention, as well as sexual reproductive health and rights.
Dr. Dale Babb, Senior Medical Officer of Health with responsibility for the HIV/STI Programme in the Ministry of Health and Wellness, explained why they have decided to use the sport of football.
