The Barbados Olympic Association has officially launched its sustainability strategy for the next five years, titled “Play Green, Live Clean, It’s in Our Nature.”
Today’s media conference, held in recognition of World Environment Day, reinforces the BOA’s commitment to the United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.
The education drive among local federations will be spearheaded by six current and former athletes who will serve as sustainability ambassadors.
They are Chelsea Tuach (surfing), triathletes Matthew Wright and Kayla Renwick, wrestler Adrian Maynard, and former national swimmers Terrance Haynes and Matthew Forde.
BOA President Sandra Osborne also took the opportunity to launch a new plastic bottle receptacle at the association’s headquarters in Wildey, in partnership with B’s Recycling.
Ms Osborne highlighted the role sport, and in particular the International Olympic Committee, has to play in sustainability efforts.
Director of I.G.T. Antilles, Shelly Ann Hee Chung, applauded the BOA for being the first Caribbean National Olympic Committee to formally sign an international declaration on sustainability.
The BOA’s sustainability lead, Dr. Sasha Sutherland, outlined the four Sports for Nature principles and shared that they have partnered with local groups to address biodiversity impacts.
