Under the theme “Igniting Passion, Fueling Dreams,” the joint opening ceremony of the 52nd CARIFTA Track and Field and 38th CARIFTA Aquatics Championships was held earlier this evening at the Hasley Crawford Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago.
Barbados is represented in track and field by 53 athletes, while the swimming contingent consists of 26 swimmers. During the parade of teams, they were led through the stadium by flag bearers: sprint hurdler Alika Harewood and distance runner Fynn Armstrong from athletics, along with swimmers Isabella Mayers and Theodore Narain.
The ceremony showcased the best of Trinidad and Tobago’s culture, featuring stilt walkers, steel pan music, and performances from soca artistes.
Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Stuart Young, had the honour of declaring the games open.
Both competitions, the CARIFTA Track and Field Championships at the Hasley Crawford Stadium and the CARIFTA Aquatics Championships at Trinidad’s National Aquatic Centre, will begin tomorrow at 9 a.m.
