Humble, leader, encourager, just a few words used to describe the late George Anthony Richardson Shepherd, noted basketball coach at the National Sports Council.
Shepherd, who passed away in May at the age of 79, was a former national basketballer and national coach.
The retired coach made his mark in several areas, including serving as mentor and coach to the MaCAWS Netball Team, the inaugural Tri-Stars Combined Schools Basketball Team, and the Budge Buy Heat Basketball Team.
Several of his former colleagues, sports administrators, and Government officials were in attendance for the funeral today at the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium.
Shepherd’s daughter, Liza Valldares, reflected on her father’s determination to make an impact in local sport.
In a glowing tribute, Chairman of the NSC, McDonald Fingall, said Shepherd’s contribution to basketball and sports in general in Barbados was tremendous.
Shepherd was laid to rest at a private interment.
