Matthew Wright’s road to Paris

July 29, 2024

Matthew Wright will lineup among 56 men set to get going in the men’s triathlon following in the footsteps of Jason Wilson who did so for Barbados at the Rio 2016 Olympic games.

Matthew’s road to Paris was a tough one following the disappointment of just missing out on qualification to Tokyo 2020. He fought hard to make the cut for Paris 2024.

Matthew goes in ranked 75th in the world, with 76 career starts, nine being podium finishes, five of them wins.

He won his first-ever international race at the Asia Triathlon Cup in Aqaba, Jordan in 2022 and this was the start of Matthew’s push to compete on the world’s biggest sporting stage.

Within the past year, Matthew peaked at the right time, 2023 was the key year for Olympic qualification, and Matthew had an exceptional one, with five international podiums, including three more wins, one of which took place at the Pan-American Sprint Championships in Santa Marta, Colombia.

These performances put him firmly in pole position to seal the Paris qualification.

He cemented his ticket to Paris in March of this year and no place better than right here on home soil with his second place at the World Triathlon Championship series.

Based in the UK Matthew has put in the final work needed to be fully conditioned for one of his biggest events to date.

Matthew will hit the water tomorrow morning at 2 am Barbados time for the first leg of the race – the swim – before tackling the cycling and road race legs of the men’s triathlon.

This is our Olympic Matthew Wright ready to rep the 246.
