West Indies captain Hayley Matthews has been ruled out of the upcoming WBBL season due to shoulder surgery.
Matthews, who was signed as a pre-draft recruit by defending champions Melbourne Renegades, was declared unavailable just hours before the draft.
She recently sustained the injury while fielding in the first ODI against England and missed the last two games of that series.
Despite the setback, Matthews played in the home ODIs against South Africa and is expected to feature in the upcoming T20I series, as well as the Women’s CPL in September for the Barbados Royals.
She will undergo surgery during the Women’s ODI World Cup, a tournament West Indies failed to qualify for, and will be out of action for the remainder of the year.
Matthews played a pivotal role in Renegades’ title-winning campaign last season.
She was their top scorer with 324 runs at a strike rate of 130.64 and their second-highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets, maintaining an economy of 6.98. In the final against Brisbane Heat, she earned Player of the Match honours for her 69 off 61 and figures of 2 for 24.
