West Indies poised for historic Netherlands series

February 19th, 2022

West Indies will tour the Netherlands for the first time later this year for a historic one-day series, Cricket West Indies announced Friday.

The tour, which runs from May 31 to June 4, will be played at the VRA Cricket Ground in Amstelveen, a city in the country’s northeast, and will form part of the International Cricket Council’s ODI Super League.

“We have been working closely with our colleagues at KNCB (Koninklijke Nederlandse Cricket Board) to put together this series immediately after the IPL and we are happy to now be able to announce the match schedule,” said Johnny Grave, CWI’s chief executive.

“It’s going to be exciting to tour the Netherlands for the first time. It is a short tour, but we expect great entertainment during what promises to be a wonderful week of quality cricket for the fans in The Netherlands.”

Former Netherlands international Roland Lefebvre, now the KNCB’s High Performance Manager, said there was great anticipation surrounding the tour.

“The KNCB is very excited to welcome the West Indies cricket team back to the Netherlands,” he said.

“The last time the team visited our country was in 1991, for two 55-over friendly matches, with the likes of Richards, Haynes, Ambrose, and Marshall present.

“These matches will be the second Cricket World Cup Super League home series for the Dutch team and we look forward to a great Caribbean style contest.”

The Netherlands had a busy 2021, hosting Scotland and Ireland, and touring South Africa before the series was aborted after one match due to COVID-19 concerns.

Last month, they clashed with Afghanistan in the Gulf state of Qatar, losing 3-0.

The Netherlands featured at the 2011 World Cup on the subcontinent, losing all six of their group stage matches. West Indies crushed them by 215 runs in Delhi.
