Government obtaining 5,000 hurricane straps

February 24, 2023

Senior Minister William Duguid has announced that the Government is obtaining 5,000 hurricane straps for people living below the poverty line.

Speaking during today’s Post-Cabinet press conference he says the 5,000 kits were ordered in the first instance at a cost of $250 per kit.

The minister says the freak storm and Hurricane Elsa caused significant destruction of roofs and the straps would aid in making the houses more resilient.

He adds that the Government is aiming to get straps on the houses before the start of the hurricane season, which starts in another six weeks.

Also speaking during the press conference was the Minister in the Ministry of Culture, Senator Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight, who says the Season of Emancipation will be from April 14 to August 27 this year and will include five months of cultural celebration.

She also says Crop Over this year will see the return of Junior Kadooment.

Dr. Munro-Knight adds while the Cabinet has already decided on a route for Grand Kadooment this year, it will be officially announced next week, after meeting with stakeholders.
