September 28th, 2022

Female wards of the Government Industrial School could be relocated from the Barrows, St. Lucy facility to the one in Dodds, St. Philip as early as next Monday.

The revelation from Acting Principal, Katherine Jordan, during a tour of the St. Philip facility led by Home Affairs Minister Wilfred Abrahams.

The Dodds compound has been undergoing renovations to prepare for the relocation of the female wards.

Officials say the work is about 95% complete despite several challenges encountered due to the age of the building.

The work mainly involved the refurbishment of a number of existing buildings including the female and male dorms, staff quarters and recreation room.

The relocation of the female wards was one of the key recommendations made by the panel of a now concluded departmental inquiry into the institution, following allegations of abuse and mistreatment.
