“There really shouldn’t be a big reason for pause.”

That was the assertion of Independent Senator Kevin Boyce, as the Upper House debated the Constitutional Amendment Bill, which among other changes, sought to make way for people to be included in the Houses of Parliament from 18-year-olds.

While he noted that the youth of Barbados have an important role to play, Senator Boyce noted that the Forde Commission addressed the issue of age.

Over the weekend, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley opted not to pursue her bid to have 18-year-old Khaleel Kothdiwala appointed as a Senator, in light of the clear indication by Independent Senators that they would not have supported the measure.

Prominent Attorney-at-Law Gregory Nicholls will instead become the country’s newest Government senator.
