Guyana: woman jailed for trying to extort ex-boyfriend

June 8th, 2022

In Guyana, a 22 year old woman has been sentenced to three years in prison for attempting to extort GUY $10 million from her ex-boyfriend, by making a false rape claim.

The incident occurred between Janaury 4th and 7th, 2021.

Princess Williams and her ex Kenrick Thomas had been in a four-month relationship and had engaged in consensual sex. However, following an argument they broke up.

Williams subsequently sent a voice note to Thomas claiming that he had raped her, and giving him an ultimatum to either pay up or she would make a report to that effect to the police.

However, the ex-boyfriend lodged a report with the police.

Williams was found guilty on May 6th, 2022, and was to be remanded to prison pending sentencing. However, while being escorted to the East La Penitence Police Station, she complained of feeling unwell and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital the next day.

After receiving medical attention, she asked to use the washroom and made a dash for freedom. She was later found, with a cloth wrapped around her wrist to hide the handcuff.

Williams was subsequently charged with escaping from lawful custody and remanded to prison.

The escape from lawful custody case is still ongoing.
