More success for Joseph at Woodbine

November 28, 2022

Jockey Edgard Zayas gave Barbadian Saffie Joseph Jr success in the Grade 3  CAN$159 300 Grey Stakes when he guided to 5-2 co-second choice Bluebirds Over to a thrilling win in one of two added-money races at Woodbine on Saturday.

Bluebirds Over led briefly before dropping back to chase pacesetter 14-1 One Bay Hemingway, before sweeping to the front again at the furlong marker late on, to complete a 1-½ length score in a time of one minute, 45.32 seconds.

One Bay Hemingway finished second while 6-1 choice Mo Tourist rallied to be third.

For Bluebirds Over, it was the bay colt’s second win in as many starts, helping Joseph to expand his success in Canada after dominating for the last few years on the eastern seaboard of the United States.

“He was green the first time. He broke out of there last time and he broke straight to go to the lead, and I was trying to take a hold of him to sit second,” said Zayas.

“It took me a little bit to relax him. But today, he broke out of there sharp, and he relaxed from the get-go. He’s really impressive.”

Up against the two-year-olds in a mile and sixteenth trip, Bluebirds Over raced through the quarter in 25.17 seconds before being caught by One Bay Hemingway, who then made the running with fractions of 48.81 and one minute, 12.37 seconds.

One Bay Hemingway led off the final turn but Bluebirds Over challenged again mid-stretch and got by on the outside, to hit the wire easing up.
