Thomas charged with match fixing

West Indies all-rounder Devon Thomas has been charged with match fixing by the International Cricket Council and provisionally banned from playing.

The ICC laid seven charges against Thomas, relating to attempting to fix the outcome of games and obstructing investigations by concealing, tampering with or destroying evidence.

Four of the charges relate to matches in the Lanka Premier League Twenty20 Tournament in Sri Lanka in 2021.

Two relate to matches in the Caribbean Premier League T20 competition in the same year, and one relates to matches in the T10 Cricket League in the United Arab Emirates, also in 2021.

Specifically concerning the CPL Code of Conduct, Thomas broke Article 2.4.2 which is failing to disclose to the designated anti-corruption official, the receipt of any gift, payment, hospitality or benefit that he knew or should have known was made in order to procure a breach of the CPL Code, or could have brought the player or the game of cricket into disrepute.

Also, Article 2.4.4 – which is failing to disclose to the designated anti-corruption official, full details of an approach or invitations received to engage in corrupt conduct in relation to the CPL 2021.

The 33-year-old has fourteen days to respond to the charges.

Meantime, Cricket West Indies says it is not directly involved in the process but remains firm in denouncing corruption in cricket, and fully supports the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit in its efforts to uphold the integrity of the sport.

The statement added that CWI will not make any further comments in respect of the charges.
